Legato — a free daily word chain puzzle
Legato is a free daily word puzzle in your browser. Every day there is one new puzzle, the same for everyone: five or six scrambled English words. Swap them until every neighbouring pair, read left to right, forms a real compound word.
How to play Legato
- Tap a word, then another word. They swap places. Every swap counts.
- When two neighbours form a real word, the link between them turns green: FOOT + BALL makes football.
- Solve the chain when every link is green, for example BARE · FOOT · BALL · ROOM · MATE (barefoot, football, ballroom, roommate).
- Par is the fewest swaps the puzzle can be solved in. Match par for three stars. Any order where every link is green wins.
Questions
Is Legato free?
Yes. Legato is free to play, with no account and no download. It works on phones and computers.
When is a new puzzle released?
A new chain unlocks every day at midnight in your local time zone.
Is Legato like Wordle?
It is a daily word game you can share like Wordle, but instead of guessing a word you reorder words into a chain of compound words. Some links are sneaky, where the compound has nothing to do with its parts: CAR + ROT makes carrot, PAR + DON makes pardon.
How hard is it?
Mondays are gentle five-word warm-ups. Puzzles get trickier through the week, and Sundays have six words and decoy links.
Can I share my result?
Yes. The share button copies your stars, swaps and a row of green squares, without spoiling the words.
